About Ben Laube

Intro

Hi there!

I'm Ben Laube, a game developer with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. My passion for video games began in childhood, inspired by the way games can spark imagination and immerse players in entirely new worlds. Over time, that fascination evolved into a commitment to designing and building interactive experiences of my own.

Throughout my development journey, I've led student teams in developing full games and prototypes, guiding projects from concept to completion. Beyond that, I've worked on a wide range of projects, from game design class projects and game jams to personal projects and refined portfolio pieces. I primarily develop in Unity, create 2D art in Aseprite and Gimp, and model 3D objects and environments in Blender, and enjoy exploring new technologies that expand what interactive experiences can be. My goal is to create games that are not only fun to play but meaningful and memorable long after the credits roll.

Education

In May 2024, I graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, along with minors in Mathematics and Psychology. My academic background provided a strong foundation in programming, software architecture, and analytical problem-solving skills, which directly support my work as a developer.

As part of my senior design project, my team developed a VR educational safety application in collaboration with an industry sponsor. This experience enabled me to work in a professional, client-driven environment, applying both technical and design principles to a real-world project.

Development Journey

I have been developing games in Unity for over five years, continuously building, iterating, and learning with each project. From small experimental prototypes to published releases, each experience has strengthened my understanding of gameplay systems, production workflows, and player-centered design.

Whether I'm implementing complex mechanics, experimenting with new tools, or refining the feel of a system, I strive to blend creativity with technical precision. I'm always looking for opportunities to grow as a developer and to create innovative, immersive experiences that resonate with players.

Thank you for taking the time to read a little bit about me.

About BifrostGames

Independent Game Development by Ben Laube

Origins of the Name

The name “Bifrost” comes from the gamer tag I created for myself when I got my first PlayStation3 at 13 years old. At the time, I was very into Marvel movies (I still am), and Heimdall from the Thor films was my favorite character.

In Norse mythology, Heimdall's responsibility is to operate and guard the Bifrost, the Asgardian transportation system between realms. Wanting a name inspired by Heimdall without directly using “Heimdall", I chose the gamer tag Bifrost_Guardian and have been using it ever since. Note the characteristic misspelling of the word guardian. This, being a result of 13-year-old me not knowing how to spell the word, became a part of my online-gaming persona.

In the fall of 2022, during the first semester of my junior year of college, I began seriously considering starting a game development company for the first time. My main goal then was to publish a game; something playable and potentially monetizable. Not my magnum opus, but something that would give me a starting point.

I thought step one should be to create a brand. I considered a few options, from creating a development persona and pseudonym to choosing a more collective studio-style name. In the end, I landed somewhere in between and chose to build from my longtime gamer tag. That's how BifrostGames was created, a name that now represents both my collection of games and my development identity.
